It might be old news that the paradigm for spinal cord protection has changed dramatically in the past few years: rigid spine boards have been de-emphasized, soft collars are becoming popular once more, and most prehospital healthcare providers are now trained to conduct spinal clearance exams using NEXUS criteria. The days of standing takedowns and almost obligatory application of spine boards for nearly every kind of trauma are behind us.
What's surprising, though, is that the NREMT has made a major change to the way this area of skill is tested on the initial certification exam for new EMS providers.
